Docs · Switching
Export your logins from the password manager you use today, then import the file into the BetterSign app. It takes a few minutes, and the file never leaves your devices.
Docs › Switch from another password manager
Early access. Import is part of BetterSign Passwords, which is in early access. Ask to join. The menu paths below were checked in October 2026. Password managers move them from time to time; if yours looks different, look for Export in its settings.
BetterSign reads the file on your phone. It isn’t uploaded anywhere, not even to us.
An export file holds every password in plain text. Anyone who gets a copy can read them all.
Export on a computer you trust. Move the file straight to your phone, not by email, chat or cloud storage. Delete it as soon as you’ve imported. Choose an encrypted export only where these steps say so, because BetterSign can’t open most encrypted exports yet.
You’ll need the BetterSign app set up with Vault (Passwords) (see Set up the app), and your old password manager’s master password, which it asks for before exporting.
Find your password manager below. Each one ends with a file you’ll pick in BetterSign.
| From | Choose this format | Also works |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden | .json (not encrypted) | .csv |
| 1Password | 1PUX | CSV (logins only) |
| NordPass | CSV | — |
| Keeper | JSON | CSV |
| Dashlane | CSV (a zip file) | — |
| Proton Pass | Proton Pass zip, encryption off | CSV |
| KeePass, KeePassXC | XML | KeePassXC CSV |
| Chrome, Edge, Brave, Firefox, Safari | CSV | — |
JSON keeps more than CSV: several website addresses per login and Bitwarden’s matching rules. Items in an organization vault are exported separately, from the Admin Console’s export page.
A .1pux file is a zip; pick it as it is. CSV also works but carries logins only.
If there’s no Export option, your company’s Keeper admin has turned exporting off; ask them. Keeper’s CSV has no column headings, so if you use CSV, choose Keeper in BetterSign before picking the file.
Pick the zip as it is; BetterSign reads the logins from it. If you unzipped it, pick credentials.csv. Business admins can block exporting.
BetterSign can’t open a .kdbx database directly yet, so export it first:
Entries in the Recycle Bin, and old versions from an entry’s history, are left out automatically.
chrome://password-manager), go to Settings, and choose Export passwords.brave://password-manager/settings and choose Export passwords.about:logins, then the … menu, and choose Export Passwords.Any other CSV with columns for the website, username and password works too. Choose Other / CSV.
Use a direct route: a USB cable, Android’s Quick Share, or AirDrop to an iPhone (save it to Files). On Android, save it in the Downloads folder. Avoid email, messaging apps and cloud drives: they keep copies you’d have to hunt down later.
If your old password manager has an export option in its own phone app, you can export straight on the phone instead.
Everything is saved in one step. If anything goes wrong, nothing is changed. You can import several files, for example a personal vault and a work vault; logins already saved are skipped.
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Imported | Website addresses (several per login if your old manager had them), username or email, password and notes. The item’s title and folder are added at the top of its notes. The original creation date is kept where the export has it. |
| Not yet | Two-factor (TOTP) codes, passkeys, attachments and custom fields. The import screen counts them so you know what to keep elsewhere. |
| Not imported | Secure notes, payment cards, identities, SSH keys and documents. Also archived or deleted items, logins with no password, and logins with no website address (including app-only logins). |
A few details:
https:// (such as github.com) is saved as https://github.com.Export again and choose plain .json. See Bitwarden.
Export the database to XML (KeePass) or CSV/XML (KeePassXC) and pick that file. See KeePass.
In Proton Pass, export again with PGP encryption turned off.
The file needs columns for the website, username and password. If it’s from Keeper, choose Keeper before picking the file. Otherwise, check you picked the export and not another file.
That’s only a note: the file came from a different password manager than the one you chose. If it’s the file you meant, carry on.
BetterSign fills logins by website address, so a login without one can’t be used in the browser. Add those by hand with the right address. App-only logins (for example androidapp://) are in this group too.
The login may be saved under a different address than the one you sign in on. Edit it in Vault (Passwords) and add the sign-in address. See Troubleshooting in the main guide.
